Eloho Omame: Can the Nigerian market support both Konga and Jumia at scale?

The recently released Kinnevik Q2 2016 earnings report has spurred a ton of speculation in the ecosystem by revealing that Konga has 184,000 “active customers” (amongst other things).

We put together a conference call yesterday at noon with Nairametric’s Ugodre Obi-Chukwu, Interswitch’s Ope Adeoye, Eloho Omame, Yvonne Johnson and Supermart’s Raphael Afaedor. I fucking loved it. Learnt a lot, too. You should listen to it here.

Eloho dropped off the call early on (sigh, Nigerian internet), but she published her thoughts about the report and the e-commerce business in Nigeria. In that brilliant post, Eloho takes the position that neither Konga nor Jumia is running a sustainable business model and that the Nigerian market does not have the capacity to support both of them at scale. It makes sense, and some people think a merger is inevitable. Time will tell if we will see a #Junga20xx (that was a poor attempt at a wedding hashtag).
