Born in Zaria, Nigeria to a military family, noted artist Dbanj knew from an early age that music was his calling. With early mentors such as hiss older brother and the famous Afrobeat star Fela Kuti, Dbanj took his love of music to the world stage. His famous hits have earned him international fame and brought glory to his land and tribe.
Oladapo Daniel Oyebanjo, otherwise known as Dbanj, derived his stage name from his birth name. After his family moved to England when he was 11 years old, he was enrolled into military school to follow his father’s footsteps. He soon realized that this was not the path for him that he wanted to walk on. His love for music grew after he joined the school’s drum group. After the tragic death of his 17 year old older brother, Femi, who died in a plane crash, D’banj set foot into the world of music permanently.
In the year 2001, D’banj made his way around UK and met up with producer-songwriter, Don Jazzy. The two formed a kinship and musical partnership which brought them back to Lagos, Nigeria in the year 2004. Their collaborations brought forth D’banj’s first single, “Tongolo”.
Dbanj and Don Jazzy continued with their successes after their first hit. Inspired by his mentor, Fela Kuti, he went on to create a fusion of Afrobeat and Afropop in his music, performing in Yoruba, English and Pidgin English. Dbanj’s debut album, No Long Thing, was finally released in the year 2005. The success of No Long Thing also brought forth collaborations with other famous artists like Dare Art Alde and Ikechukwu.
In the year 2006, D’banj went on to release his second album, Rundown Funk U Up. “Why Me?”, a single from this album, was received very well and was a big hit. The hits continued in the years 2007 and 2008, with the albums Curriculum Vitae and The Entertainer respectively. Curriculum Vitae was a collaborative success along with Mo’ Hits Allstars, Dr SID, Wande Coal, D’Prince and Kayswitch. Singles such as “Be Close To You, Booty Call” and “Move Your Body” were all big hits by him and his collaborators. From The Entertainer, singles “Gbono Feli Feli”, “Kimon, Olorun Maje” and “Entertainer” were also well received by his fans.
D’banj’s music brought him awards from near and far. He received two Ghana Music Awards in 2007 and 2009. He also received four MTV Africa Music Awards in the years 2008 and 2009. Two MTV Europe Music Awards in the years 2007 and 2012 and 2011 BET Award for best African act. These are just a small portion of his accolades. Dbanj is no doubt well deserving of all his awards.
