5 Things You Should Know About The Ongoing ASUU Strike

After an extensive deliberation that lasted three days, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has resolved to embark on an indefinite strike action.

1) The decision was disclosed in a statement signed on August 12 by the ASUU President, Biodun Ogunyemi, after a series of discussions with the government.

2) Ogunyemi, the ASUU President explained that the government has failed to fully implement the 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement and the 2013 Memorandum of Understanding.

3) Some of the issues include, non-payment of salaries, non-payment of earned academic allowance (EAA), removal of universities staff schools from funding by government and non-implementation of provisions of the 2014 pension reform act with respect to retired professors and their salaries, amongst others.

4) The lecturers also complained of the kidnap of two lecturers of the University of Maiduguri by the Boko Haram.

5) The ASUU President added that related demands made by the union have not been addressed, which is why they have resolved to embark on a “total, comprehensive and indefinite strike” from Sunday, August 13, 2017.
