Nigerian singer and politician, Banky W has called on the Nigerian government to change the laws regarding child marriage in the country.
The singer who is known for being vocal on issues regarding human rights and the female child took to his Twitter page to state that the government should do something about child marriage. According to him, many Nigerians like to hide behind religion for marrying children(below 18). He added that if Saudi Arabia can raise the age of marriage to 18, then Nigeria should do the same because it is the right thing to do.
He wrote: “Some Nigerians try to hide behind religion as the reason why they should be allowed to marry children. But if Saudi Arabia – the kingdom, the headquarters i.e. Mecca, can raise the age of Marriage to 18 (because it’s the right thing to do) then Nigeria has no excuse. #Timeup”
