Legendary Nigerian Football star, Kanu Nwankwo popularly called ‘Papilo’ turns forty today, August 1st 2016.To commemorate him, below are nine things you might not have known about the now retired football icon.
1.Kanu Nwankwo was born on August 1, 1976 in Owerri.
2.He captained the Nigerian team that won gold at the Atlanta 96′ Olympics.
3.Kanu was signed by Arsenal for approximately £4.15 million in February 1999.
4. He is also a member of the “Invincibles”, the Arsenal side that finished the 2003–04 season of the Barclays Premier League undefeated.
5.Kanu underwent a heart surgery in November 1996 which led to his founding the Kanu Heart foundation in 2008.
6. He was crowned African Footballer Of The Year twice in 1996 and 1999.
7.The former Super Eagles striker got married to his wife, Amarachi in December 2004 and is blessed with three children( two sons and a daughter) and one of his sons, Sean is rapidly warming up to take after him.
8.He is a Goodwill ambassador for UNICEF and also a Brand Ambassador for online and retail bookmaker SportyBet.com.
9.He captained the Nigerian national team for 16 years (1994-2010)
